People, craft and convictions.

A design and technology studio in Edmonton. Strategists, designers and engineers, working side by side since 2002.

The in-between

For most of our history we’ve been hard to categorize: too technical for the creatives, too creative for the engineers. We stopped trying to fix that. The overlap is where our best work happens.

How we think

We take you from here to there

Design is the spec.

Design is the most explicit context a build can get. When AI does more of the building, it follows what the design says, including what it says badly. So we get the design right first, whether that’s a screen, an experience or the way a team’s systems connect. Then we build exactly that.

Judgment is the scarce part.

When building gets fast, the hard part is knowing what to build and recognizing when it’s right. That comes from context: the people who’ll use it, the organization behind it, the constraints nobody wrote down. Directing AI well turns out to look a lot like art direction or architecture: you set the intent, and you know what good looks like before it arrives.

The thinking is a deliverable.

Much of the value in a modern project sits in the work before the build: the decisions, the language, the trade-offs, what “done” means. We treat it as part of what we make, and hand it over with the rest.

How we work

What working with us is like

The same people, start to finish.

Senior designers and engineers shape the idea and stay with it until it works, so nothing gets lost between the design and the build.

Prototypes before presentations.

A working version answers questions a deck can’t. We’d rather show you something you can use in week two than describe it in week six.

Useful is the test.

We know a tool is working when people bring it into the next meeting to show someone else.

We try the thing that might not work.

A lot of what we know came from experiments nobody asked for. Some of them are in Labs.

The last ten percent counts.

Plenty of good projects stall in the weeks before launch. We give the last ten percent the care we gave the first.

Core Values

Rules to live by

The five things we hold each other to.

Team works.

We do our strongest work when clients and Lift act as one team.

Pursue excellence.

In the idea, the craft and the delivery.

Create value.

For the real people who will use what we make.

Go bravely.

When the path isn’t obvious, we find one.

Finish well.

Endings matter, for a project and for a working relationship.

Where we came from

Lift started in 2002 as a small web studio, when one team could design and build a whole site.

Then the web got complicated. Serious projects needed specialists, and specialists meant handoffs: strategy to design, design to development, development to whoever kept it running. Each one lost a little of the original intent, and the industry largely accepted that as the price of big projects. We grew too. But we kept designers and developers on the same problems, and kept asking each to understand the other’s craft.

Now the handoffs are collapsing. When AI does much of the building, one team can hold the whole problem again: who it’s for, how it should feel, how the system fits together, why it exists at all. That’s the work we never stopped doing.
