Introduction

On October 8, 2026, one of our developers walked Memorial Drive with the City of Calgary and the walkway committee, checking each medallion’s spot. The app was ready.

The walkway runs five kilometres from Mewata Armoury to the George C. King pedway bridge. Its 31 bronze medallions carry 100 stories of Calgarians who served. The committee researched and wrote the stories, sourced the photographs and recorded the audio. We designed and built the app and website that let people find them, on the route or anywhere else.

It’s the third memorial app we’ve built, after Edmonton’s Commonwealth Walkway and the Vimy Foundation’s Vimy: A Living Memorial.

01

The app

Walk up to a medallion and its stories appear.

A live map follows you along the route. As you near a medallion, its stories come forward with photographs and audio.

Three app screens: a medallion on the map, the Home Front storyline, and a story with its audio
  1. 01

    Six storylines

Each drawn as a path through the medallions that hold its stories.

  2. 02

    QR codes on the signs

Each one opens its medallion directly.

  3. 03

    Off the route too

Every story is available anywhere, not only on Memorial Drive.

Four languages

Translated by AI, reviewed by people.

Every story is in English, French, Punjabi and Chinese. Claude produced the first translation, working to rules set in advance, such as never translating Indigenous names. The translations were in the app five days after the content arrived. Native speakers then reviewed each language and made corrections.

We also added subtle motion to a small set of archival images. We invented no scenes, created no new photography, and kept motion away from the people pictured.

Built with Claude Code

A fast build inside a thoughtful project.

Most of the design and build took under two months. About half of all commits were co-authored with Claude Code, including every commit in October 2026. The fast build left time for the work that can’t be rushed: gathering stories, reviewing them with the committee and translators, and testing on the route.
